How to Acquire Monero or Zcash
Acquiring Monero or Zcash is fairly straightforward, even if you're new to cryptocurrencies. Zcash is generally easier to acquire given it has greater mainstream support and availability.
Below are a few steps to get started if you’re new to the space. You can of course skip this if you’re a privacy coin OG.
1. Create a Secure and Privacy Friendly Wallet.
Prior to purchasing, we recommend creating a wallet that you’ll ultimately store the privacy coin in. If you use a centralized exchange (CEX), this is not required, but still a good practice. If you choose to swap for Monero or Zcash, then you must create a wallet.
For Monero, we like Cake Wallet. For Zcash, we like Zashi. Exodus is another popular software wallet, though it is not considered as privacy friendly or secure since it’s not open source. Exodus also doesn’t have the ability to enable shielded transactions for Zcash. But Exodus can store both Zcash and Monero and is a good beginners wallet if you’re new to crypto and privacy coins.
2. Choose How to Acquire – Centralized Exchange or Swap?
You have two primary options:
purchase directly from a CEX like Kraken or Coinbase; or
swap a mainstream coin like Bitcoin, Ethereum or Litecoin for Monero or Zcash.
You can also mine Monero, but that’s time and resource intensive so probably won’t help you in this situation.
A CEX is effectively a way to buy crypto with a credit card or bank account. The problem is it leaves a digital trail, so undermines the privacy proposition. Kraken is probably the most mainstream CEX that offers both Monero or Zcash. Coinbase only offers Zcash.
A swapping service is a way to exchange one crypto asset for another. For example, you use Bitcoin to “purchase” Monero. We’ve used StealhEX before and can vouch that it’s legit. For first timers it will seem a bit insecure and a leap of faith. We recommend doing a test transaction to get comfortable with the process. In general, the process for swapping goes like this:
send BTC to a StealthEX wallet;
Input your Monero or Zcash wallet address;
StealthEX converts $X worth of BTC to $X worth of Monero/Zcash, and takes a small exchange fee
StealthEX deposits the Monero/Zcash into your wallet address
The whole process should only take a few minutes, but can take longer if the networks are congested.
3. Follow Our Payment Instructions:
