Urgent Privacy Message for Tesla Owners
Efforts to doxx Tesla owners should be a wake-up call for everyone
Quick post here on a time sensitive privacy issue impacting Tesla owners.
A website calling itself “DOGEQUEST” has published a searchable map allegedly containing the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of Tesla owners across the United States.
According to the site, the only way to have your information removed is to prove you no longer own a Tesla. In addition to this supposed Tesla owner database, the site also lists Tesla dealerships, the approximate locations of Tesla superchargers, and the personal details of employees working for the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The authenticity of much of this data remains unverified, but the intent is clear: to expose individuals based on what they own or where they work. Making matters worse, discussions on Reddit show some users justifying this doxxing, framing it as a justifiable form of activism.
There was a similar effort during the 2020 U.S. presidential election that some readers may recall. In that case, someone created a website named DonaldTrump.watch, designed to expose individuals who financially supported then-President Donald Trump's campaign.
That site utilized publicly available data from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to display donors' names, addresses, and contribution amounts, integrating this information with Google Maps to provide a visual representation of donor locations. The site's stated purpose was to highlight "Americans who Give Money to Support a Racist," implicitly encouraging public scrutiny and potential harassment of these individuals.
Why This Matters to Everyone
Whether you own a Tesla or not, this situation should be a wake-up call. Your personal information is out there, scattered across data broker sites, social media, and public records databases. And while today’s target may be Tesla owners, tomorrow it could be anyone tied to a controversial company, industry, or belief. We live in an age where political mobs and unhinged individuals weaponize personal data with little thought about the real-world consequences.
Steps to Protect Yourself
Whether you’re a Tesla owner or not, now is the time to get control of your personal data. As shocking as this incident is, it’s also an opportunity to take proactive steps to fortify your privacy if you’ve neglected doing so. Here are some quick, high level steps to get started on:
Check Data Broker Sites – Your personal information is likely on multiple data broker websites. DIY removal is doable, but takes time. We use DeleteMe to manage this but there are other services you are welcome to check out. (Affiliate link for DeleteMe here).
Consider a Trust for Vehicle Ownership – If you’re concerned about your vehicle being linked to your name in public records, setting up a revocable trust might be an option. This also works for your home. Consult with a lawyer, of course.
Secure Your Social Media – Consider locking down your profiles, limit personal details, and remove location check-ins or other identifying information.
Use a Secondary Address – Instead of your home address, use a virtual mailbox or PO Box for public registrations. We use PostScanMail (affiliate link here).
Have a Secondary Phone Number – Guard your primary phone number carefully. Use a VOIP number for your every day number, the one you won’t mind if it’s made public (you can easily turn it off and spin up a new one).
Use Disposable Email Addresses – Ensure your email isn’t exposed online. Or if it is, the damage is minimal. Use email aliasing services like SimpleLogin or AnonAddy.
Monitor for Leaks – Set up Google Alerts for your name and periodically monitor data breach notifications with services like Have I Been Pwned.
The Bottom Line
We are firmly in an era where owning the “wrong” product, working for the “wrong” employer, or simply being on the “wrong” side of an issue can make you a target. Your privacy is your first line of defense against harassment, swatting, and real-world threats. Use this Tesla doxxing incident as a reminder: if your personal data is exposed, you are vulnerable.
